Rain, Rain, and a Little More Rain
Hey y'all!!
This week we started a new transfer and I headed to a new area. My new companion is Elder Tuckfield and he is awesome!
I wasn't able to write last week because of some things we had to do to get ready for transfers, but the last week of that transfer was great. We were able to do a lot of service, and we taught a lot of the people we had found the week before. I'm a little sad to have left that area, just because there are so many amazing people there, but I am really loving it here!
Now this last week has been absolutely crazy. For like a week straight it's been raining here in Recife, like a lot. On Wednesday, two other missionaries packed up their bags and headed over to our apartment to stay with us (for an indefinite amount of time) because their house gets completely flooded. Have 4 missionaries here has been a little crowded, but it's been pretty fun too.
Then I would say that the flooding and rain reached its peak on Saturday. Be still left our house to work, but I will admit that we had to take off our shoes and roll up our pants just to cross a couple of streets. But we definitely made the best of it and we've been able to stay busy even with the rain.
Yesterday, sacrament meeting was all online because of all of the flooding, which definitely added to the strangeness of this week. And I have met very few members, but probably this next week as we do our best to serve all of the people here who have had problems with the rain, I will get to know a lot more.
I will say, one of the things that I have found very hard to find here in Brazil is good ice-cream. But my new area has an ice-cream shop that is pretty cheep and super super good! So I'm definitely going to eat a lot of ice cream here lol.
In terms of missionary work, we've just been focusing a lot on finding new people to teach. This area was recently split and a majority of the people being taught ended up in the other area. But so far things are going super great and we are finding lots of great people to teach.
Also I just want to share an invitation that my mission president shared with all of us. As a mission we are all going to read the Book of Mormon is 3 months (about 3 chapters a day) which is about the time it took Joseph Smith to translate it. I would encourage each of you to think about your study of the Book of Mormon and how you can improve it. Maybe reading the Book of Mormon in 3 months isn't exactly the goal meant for you, but each and every one of you can find a goal or a plan to improve your study of this sacred book. And for those of you who aren't studying the Book of Mormon, now is the time to start! If there are any of you who don't know what the Book of Mormon is or want to know more, send me an email!
Like the prophet Joseph Smith said, “I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.” The Book of Mormon really is Another Testament of Jesus Christ. It really does teach us the gospel of Jesus Christ together with the Bible. And it really does have the power to change our lives!
Have a great week everyone! And please pray for all of the people affected by the rain and flooding here in Recife!
Até mais!
Elder Hill
