Spanish? English? Portuguese?
Hey all!
This week I got a new companion. Elder Ceballos. He is actually from Venezuela but has been living here in Brazil for the last three years so he already speaks Portuguese really well. Unfortunately he caught the cold that I had a little bit ago so for a few days we were taking it easy. But he definitely didn't get it as bad as I did so I've still been able to leave our house every day to visit people.
This week we have had a lot of miracles! First off, we were talking to the Elders Quorum President one day and he let us know that our Progress Report (a list of people that we are teaching that gets shared with the leaders of the ward) is really out of date. I'll admit that I have never really used that list before so it really was out of date. But we were able to organize the list and also see a lot of families that were being taught a couple months ago who had stopped progressing or who had stopped being taught by the missionaries. We made a separate list of all of these people before removing them from the Progress Report and have been able to start visiting all of them to see if they are interested in continuing to receive our messages. And so far, we have already found a couple of people who said that they in fact are interested in continuing to learn more!
This week as well, we have had a lot of success with one family that we are teaching. I think I've mentioned Edina before, but this week we were able to get to know her two daughters who also are interested in learning more. One of them came to church on Sunday which was amazing even though the whole family wasn't able to come. With a couple more lessons and the ability to continue to get to know more members and become more comfortable with the church I have a lot of hope that they will all want to be baptized. They already love the Book of Mormon and it's amazing to see how they are progressing every day.
We also have a baptism planned for this week. (It was originally scheduled for two weeks ago but is finally happening this week after things kept changing our plans). It's a girl named Ana who has a sister who is already a member. We're hoping that with her baptism we can help the rest of her family to continue to progress as well.
And the rest of the week was pretty normal. Pretty normal visiting people, teaching lessons and all that good stuff. As well as getting to know my new companion. It is always exciting to be able to tell people that I am from the US and that Elder Ceballos is from Venezuela and that together we speak English, Spanish, and Portuguese. I have been working to teach him a little bit of English, and who knows, maybe I'll pick up a little bit of Spanish this transfer.
But other than that, the missionary life goes on. The flu / covid / whatever other sicknesses are raining down from the heavens have been hitting people pretty hard here in Brazil. Almost everyone I know has been sick sometime in the last month. But life goes on and so does missionary work. I'm super happy for all the families we have here to teach and help!
Hope you guys are all doing great!
Elder Hill
